Notice is hereby given that the Shelburne Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 7:00 PM, in the Shelburne Town Hall meeting room, 51 Bridge St., Shelburne Falls, MA. The purpose of this hearing is to allow for public review and comment on the following: revisions to Section 11 Parking Requirements and the addition of a new Section 22 Temporary Moratorium Recreational Marijuana Establishments. For review purposes only, a copy of the proposed bylaw amendments and new sections are available for inspection in the Town Clerk’s Office, 51 Bridge St., Shelburne Falls, during the Clerk’s regular business hours.

Nomination papers are now available for the upcoming May 15th, 2017 election in the Town of Shelburne. Last day to obtain Nomination papers will be Friday March 24th, 2017. Nomination papers must be returned to the Office of the Town Clerk by 5:00pm on Monday 2017.

Offices up for re-election are as follows:

Selectmen – 3 year term
Assessor – 3 year term
Moderator – 1 year term
Town Clerk – 1 year term
Planning Board – 5 year term
Recreation Committee – 5 year term, and one for an unexpired term to 2021
Two Shelburne Free Public Library Trustees - both 3 year terms
Tree warden – 1 year term
MTRSD School Committee – One member 3 year term, a second for an unexpired term to 2019.

Also, The last day to register for the May 2nd Annual Town Meeting is Wednesday, April 12th, 2017. Hours that day will be from 2-4pm and 7-8pm.

Last day to register to VOTE at the Annual Shelburne Town Election is April 26th, 2017. Hours that day will again be 2-4pm and 7-8pm.

What do you think of a new playground?

We want your feedback!

During the development of the town’s recently adopted Open Space and Recreation Plan, Shelburne residents requested more playground space. As a result, the Shelburne Recreation Committee has discussed the possibility of locating a playground in your neighborhood. The playground would be designed for toddlers to 12-year-olds. It would also give toddlers and home-schooled children access to a playground during the school day, given that the school playground is for use by the public only when school is not in session. The majority of the playground costs would be paid for using grants and donations.

Originally, the Committee discussed placing the playground within the enclosed semi-circular hedges between the Arms Academy building and Severance Street. But based on early feedback, we’ve moved the proposed location farther south – to the area between Arms Academy and Trinity Church. The playground would be placed far enough from the street for safety and far enough from the softball field so as not to interfere with games or practices. With all the parking available in the Arms Academy and Cowell Gym lots, we think this would be a great location.

Shelburne Recreation Committee

The Shelburne Cultural Council approved for funding 30 projects in its 2017 grant cycle, amounting to a total of $5,175. The awarded grants range from $50 to $700. The Council received 40 applications requesting a total of $11,834.

“We were very pleased with the overall quality of the 2017 applications that our Council received,” reports Chairperson Constance Clarke. “Guided by our priorities to encourage local venues, innovation and collaboration, this list of grants reflects a rich variety of programs and projects in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences.”

Anyone considering applying for funding from the Shelburne Cultural Council for the 2018 cycle should first check the Massachusetts Cultural Council website or inquire in writing to Shelburne Cultural Council, 51 Bridge Street, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370.

Did you know?

Shelburne was first settled in 1756 as part of Deerfield, Massachusetts known then as the "Deerfield Northwest."  It was initially organized as the district of Shelburne in 1768 (named in honor of William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne) and was officially incorporated as a town in 1775.

Therefore, Shelburne will be celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2018!
